Dr Rachel van Schaick

DClinPsy, CPsychol, BSc
Dr Rachel van Schaick - Clinical Psychologist

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 13 years experience working in children’s mental-health services in the NHS, local authority, third sector and independent settings. I am specialist in working with children, adolescents, parents and families. I offer a range of psychological services, including child assessments, child intervention, parent consultations and support for the transition to parenthood. I am passionate about promoting good mental-health for children and families.

I am experienced in working with children from infancy through to early adulthood. Some of the common issues I work with are outlined below. This is not an exhaustive list and whatever the needs of your child and family, I utilise evidence-based approaches, combined with a warm, flexible and creative approach, to tailor a bespoke package of support. I have specialist expertise in working with adoptive and foster families. I am a certified Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapist and an intermediate level Theraplay® practitioner.

  • Behaviour that is challenging or concerning, such as issues relating to sleeping, feeding, toileting, structure and boundaries
  • Child mental-health, such as anxiety and low mood
  • Trauma, loss and grief
  • Neurodiversity, such as Autism and ADHD
  • Support with changes, transitions, and family stressors, such as moving homes or schools, a parental separation, or illness in a family member
  • Parental mental-health and well-being, at any stage of the journey

I draw heavily from attachment-based approaches, which means there is a focus on safety in close relationships. Often my work with children will closely involve those caring for the child. It is sometimes helpful to involve other members of a child’s system such as educational staff. The amount and frequency of sessions required will vary widely depending on need. I will recommend an initial block of sessions, for example four to six, at which point we will review the work collaboratively to guide next steps. My work with families always begins with an initial parent-only consultation. This allows me to hear more about your needs and make recommendations for a path forwards. Please get in touch via email to arrange your first appointment.
