Emily Howes - Psychotherapist

How I work:

Whatever the reason you choose to come to therapy, I offer a warm, relational approach in a space of absolute privacy.

As an existential therapist, I work from your experience, rather than through any one predefined framework. We look at your values, your relationships, your broader world, and your inherited ideas and ways of being.

The stories we tell ourselves about our lives define us. They can both empower and trap us. I offer a place to explore the narratives we live within – both those we create ourselves, and those which are created for us by others and the world.

Specialist areas:

My practice is LGBTQ+ friendly, sex-positive and kink-aware. I am interested in supporting those in alternative lifestyles, as well as those experiencing sexual difficulties. I also hold a particular interest in working with grief and loss, having previously worked for the NHS as a bereavement counsellor, and with those experiencing fears around mortality and death.

I have published academic papers on sex and sexual issues in the therapy room, on the emotional impact of lying and being lied to, and on unlocking creativity through therapy.

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Existential Psychotherapy with Distinction from Regent’s University
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Existential Psychotherapy from Regent’s University
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Regent’s University
  • Certificate of Higher Education in Psychodynamic Counselling from Birkbeck University
  • Undergraduate degree – Masters in English Literature from the University of Cambridge (First class honours)
  • Accredited Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Member of the Society for Existential Analysis
  • Member in Advanced Clinical Training of the UKCP

Rates

My standard rate is £85 per session. I offer discounted rates available for students and trainee therapists.

Contact

You can get in touch with me directly at [email protected] or through my website www.emilyhowestherapy.com.

A first 50 minute session is a good way for us to get a sense of each other, and to explore how it might be to work together. If we feel there’s a fit, and you would like to go ahead, we commit together to a weekly time slot. We can agree on a set number of sessions to begin with, or keep it open, depending on what you would prefer.

I can also offer a block of 6 of 12 sessions for clients who have suffered a bereavement, or for whom a historic bereavement still causes significant distress.
